On Wednesday, Sept 16, 2015 I was driving home after my dental appointment and a nice family lunch with my (soon to be ex) husband our two little boys who were 3 and 10 months old, when we had a pretty horrific head-on car collision with another car. The other driver apparently had narcolepsy, fell asleep and crossed over the yellow center lane.
I was driving our town and country minivan, going about 60mph when the other car came around a blind turn and was completely over in our lane. I got pinned up in the corner where the door hinges to the dash etc, so my face was inches from the heat vent and i could only see the white of the airbag on the other side of my face. I guess I was unconscious for a bit too. I remember seeing the other driver come around the bend and be in our lane and then I remember my face being inches from my bloody knee and hearing the rescue people saying they need to cut the door off with the jaws of life.  I remember seeing the door fall to the ground and guys in yellow standing around…then they mustve yanked me out and i passed out from the pain…i remember something about being in the helicopter and arriving at the trauma center….I think I was passing out and it was mostly people saying “can you hear me? are you still with us?” etc bringing me back to consciousness.
I was in surgery and the er patient recovery room for over 36 hours before they brought me down to a regular room.   I had damage to my liver resulting in internal bleeding, and requiring 3 units of blood in the operating room and two more units once I was stabilised and in a regular patient room.  I had multiple compound fractures on both femurs, broken big toe bone (metatarsul) deep within the foot and other small fractures in the bones on that foot. The other foot had a completely crushed Talus bone which is pretty much what anchors your foot and ankle all together. The bone surgeons kept going on about how the bones were so broken and sticking out everywhere that they had a hard time telling what was bone. They said they didn’t look like bones anymore, and the head surgeon even said they looked like powder. POWDER! Now you know it’s pretty bad when even the experts don’t recognize what they’re looking at!
So Ive had surgery on my femurs and feet/ankles and have various large metal plates and pins and screws in them all…Needless to say, I was in a wheelchair for 5 months had tons of physical therapy. Thankfully, our boys were basically unhurt. They had to be cut out of their (both rear-facing) car seats by the rescue crew but they only had some slight bruising from the straps on their thighs. The car seats did their job and protected our babies!
